Robert Edward Johnson, 89, husband of Grace Baldwin Swan Johnson, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017. Born in Louisville, KY, he was the son of the late Arthur and Maybell Boley Johnson.
A graduate of duPont Manual High School in Louisville, he enlisted in the Coast Guard where he attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer in three years, serving at Upolo Point, HI. When he returned to civilian life, he entered the University of Louisville, graduating from University of Louisville Law School and practiced law in Louisville. In 1957, Bob came to Georgetown and built the radio station with call letters WAXU (Top Gun) and WBBE and built Georgetown’s first cable TV station. He later built Georgetown Self Storage, the first in Georgetown. An aviation enthusiast, Bob learned to fly at the age of 16 with the Civil Air Patrol. He was a founding member of the Georgetown/Scott County Airport Board and was one of the founders of the Kentucky Aviation Museum in Lexington. Along with wife Grace, they traveled in every state, Europe and Australia.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Michael Edward (Marie) Johnson and Doug (Kim) Johnson; step-children, Stephen (Kandis) Swan, Elizabeth Eveland and Christopher (Helen) Swan; sister, Pauline J. Fightmaster; grandchildren, Wesley (Kris) Johnson, Arthur R. Johnson, Daniel Johnson, Nicholas Johnson, Courtland Swan, Braden (Anna) Swan, Kendall Eveland, Charles Swan and Josephine Swan; as well as two great grandchildren, Robbie and Ellie Marie Johnson. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Stephen Lawrence Johnson; brother, David Johnson; and mother of his children, Mary Lou Schickli.
A memorial service will be 4 PM Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be 3 PM till service time. Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
