Obituary for Elmer David Lancaster

Elmer D. Lancaster, 99, a resident of Frankfort and Georgetown, Kentucky, passed away on Monday, December 31st, 2018. He was born on November 11th, 1919 in Switzer, Kentucky, son of the late John D. and Emma (Metts) Lancaster. Elmer is survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, Elmer was preceded in death by the love of his life, Mary Wilma Lancaster; a sister, Edna Wagner; and his longtime companion, Elizabeth Sebree.

Elmer was a World War II Veteran in the European Theater, serving in the famed 83rd Infantry Division consisting mainly of servicemen from Ohio known as the Thunderbolt Over Europe. Elmer served in five campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. Elmer participated in many major battles, including Normandy at Omaha Beach, St. Malo, The Hedgerows, Ardennes, and The Battle of the Buldge. The 83rd also liberated prisoners from Langenstein, a subcamp of the Buchenwald Concentration Camp.

Elmer lived most of his life in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he returned after the war and he and his wife Wilma made their home. Elmer was employed and retired from General Electric after thirty eight years. Following his retirement, he and Wilma moved to Georgetown, Kentucky to be closer to their relatives. After forty eight years of marriage, Elmer lost his beloved Wilma in November of 1990. He later became a companion to, and spent many happy years with, Elizabeth Sebree. Elmer later enjoyed the remaining years of his life surrounded by his devoted family members, caregivers and friends. Visitation will be Saturday, January 5th, from 11:00am until time of service at 1:00pm at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Burial will be in Georgetown Cemetery.
