Obituary for Gladys Hawthorne (Male)

Gladys Male Hawthorne, 97, widow of Robert S. Hawthorne, passed away on Sunday, July 4th, 2021. She was born on April 16th, 1924 in Schenectady, New York, daughter of the late Philip and Mary Helena (Pass) Male. Gladys worked for Senator Hugh Farley in the New York State Senate for forty years. She was an active member of Niskayuna Reformed Church, where she was a member of the Women’s Guild. Gladys enjoyed reading, word search puzzles, coloring and was an avid gardener, she enjoyed picking the first tomato from the vine every year. She volunteered in the soup kitchens with the Salvation Army for many years. Gladys is survived by her son, Bob (Mary Jane) Hawthorne; her daughter, Dorcas (Tom) Clark; two grandchildren, Amy (Mike) Solis and Jeb (Joy) Clark; five great-grandchildren; two special nieces, Nancy Martin and Monica Tryon. In addition to her parents, Gladys was preceded in death by her two sisters, Katherine Freligh and Mildred Tryon. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 10th, from 9am to 12pm at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State Street, Schenectady, New York. A graveside service will immediately follow at Niskayuna Reform Cemetery, Niskayuna.
