Obituary for Dorcas Hollingsworth Wiedemann

WIEDEMANN, DORCAS HOLLINGSWORTH, 88, almost 89. Our sweet Mother left the world November 26th. Wife, mother, and horsewoman, she was a lady who brought joy and happiness to those she met. She never quit and constantly defied the odds. As we cheered her on, we were amazed by her strength. She was a legend, and will be remembered for her energetic love of life. Born December 28, 1926, in St. Louis, Missouri, she was the only daughter, along with four brothers, of Denzil and Thema Hollingsworth. She moved to Kentucky at age 10, due to her love of all things equine. After attending school at University of Kentucky, where she was a UK cheerleader in 1943, and also attending Sophie Newcomb in New Orleans, Louisiana, she headed to New York City to experience the life of a photographer.

She returned to Kentucky, as a photographer at Purcell’s Department Store, where she met her husband to be, Jefferson Wiedemann. They made a life together and had five children. Jefferson Mark (Jackie) Wiedemann, Randal (Martha) Wiedemann, Holly (Bart van Dissel) Wiedemann, Britton (Erin) Wiedemann, and Hope (John) Curtis. She was loved and adored by her 15 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She lived her life with tenacity, wit, and courage. She was a trail blazer and knew no limits. She could drive a tractor in the afternoon, ride a horse, and be beautifully dressed for dinner on any given evening. It is no coincidence that she passed from this life on Thanksgiving. She loved a party, and she loved to entertain. She enjoyed being surrounded by family, and we were all there as she graduated from this life.

She leaves a legacy of love. She was the last of her era, and will be sorely missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson, and her brothers, Donn, Hall, Kent, and Vertrees. She had a vigorous love of learning, and was a Donovan Scholar for many years. Her active physical life included tennis at Spindletop and gardening, as well as her treasured membership in the Monday Club.

Visitation will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Georgetown, Kentucky, on Sunday, November 29th between 3 and 5 pm. A Celebration of Life service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Kentucky, on Monday, November 30th at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Sanders Brown Center on Aging at the University of Kentucky.
