Obituary for Lois Williams Cloyd

Lois Williams Cloyd, 81, of Blacksburg, Virginia (formerly of Georgetown, Kentucky), went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 8, 2016.

She was born in Laurel County, Kentucky on August 26, 1934 to the Rev. Morgan and Nancy Elizabeth Williams. She married Larry Calvin Cloyd on January 29, 1956. They were married 58 years, until his death in 2013.

Lois received her teaching certificate from Sue Bennett College in 1954 and began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse serving grades 1-8 in Rockingham, KY. She later returned to college after her children were in school and received her Bachelor of Arts in Education from the University of Kentucky in 1968, Master of Arts in Education in 1972 and Rank 1 in 1983. She taught hundreds of Scott County children at Southern, Garth and Stamping Ground Elementary Schools throughout her 27 year teaching career, retiring in 1994.
Lois was a caring and generous mother, sister, teacher and friend. She led a life guided by her faith in God and instilled that faith in her children. She taught by example the value of hard work, honesty, and service to others.

She was an active leader in the Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU). Her WMU Circle at Buck Run Baptist Church was renamed the Lois Cloyd Circle in her honor in 2006. She was also an active member and officer of Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK), an International Honorary Organization of Women Educators.

Left cherishing her memory are her four children: Rev. C. Brent Cloyd (Jeanette) of Fairfield, IL; Brenda Kendrick (Bryan) of Cleveland, GA; Beverly Leek (Bruce) of Cary, NC; and Dr. C. Bryan Cloyd (Renee) of Blacksburg, VA; and eight grandchildren, Jeremy, Brock and Brittney Cloyd; Nathan and Noah Kendrick; Jordan and Jenna Grace Leek; Andrew Cloyd. She is also survived by sisters Janet (Tim) Sparkman and Zula (John) Barnard, brother George (Barbara) Williams, all of London, KY; and sister Bertie (Ken) Overbey of Hamilton, OH: sister-in-laws Lorna Cloyd of Lexington, KY and Aileen Williams of Cynthiana, KY; and a host of nieces and nephews scattered around the country.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Calvin Cloyd; sisters Pearl, Lella, Etsye, Flora, and Zuma; brother Denver; and precious granddaughter Austin Michelle Cloyd, with whom she now enjoys the glories of Heaven.

Visitation with the family will be at Johnsons Funeral Home in Georgetown, KY on Thursday, February 11, from 4:00-7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held in the old sanctuary of Buck Run Baptist Church in Frankfort, KY on Friday, February 12 at 10:30 am. Burial will be in Georgetown, KY.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Buck Run Baptist Church (WMU Missions), 3894 Georgetown Road, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
