Donerail

Sue Ann moved into the neighborhood when her parents bought the Donerail General Sore on the Ironworks Pike, just across from the farm that I grew up on.  Though I'm two years older, she was my first girl playmate in the neighborhood.  Before her, there was only Mike Gifford, but of course he was a boy.  I have so many crazy memories of spending time at their house beside the store, but most of the worse were about Tim.  Sue was just a sweet little girl bright, guiet reader, always in tight neat braids and a big smile.  I don't think I ever saw her down or angry as a child.  I have lots of memorites of her laughing her head off.

Mike was the big comic book reader, which he wasn't supposed to buy, so they were hidden under his bed in a big flat box so that his father wouldn't see them.  He had more comics than I think I'd seen a single person own.

Tim was the dickens!  I think he was a little spoiled and treated with kid gloves because of the heart surgery that he'd had when he was very young.  I remember him swiping candy from the store, burying it in the back yard and then being furious when he dug it up and there were only wrappers.  Of course, he didn't think of ants getting it and blamed Sue, Mike and me.  I don't know if that was the time and reason that he peed on my tennis shoes but the last time I saw him, he was still proud of it.  I think when he was a little older, he and Jeff Gifford decided to explore the attic in the house and ended up dropping throughthe ceiling to the kitchen table.  Mr. Ott always seemed a little grumpy.....I'm sure he had his reasons!

We went different ways because of school and our age difference.  I also left home at 19 for Australia and didn't return for 6 years.  Sue was living in Florida and bought home a beautiful, baby Chad.  I don't think we had much contact after that.

I love the video.  She turned into a gorgeous woman.  I hope life kept her smiling as much as she did as a little girl. Despite not seeing her, it  saddens me very much to think she's not in our world anymore.  I hope she's riding horses all over heaven and realizes how many people love her, no how long it's been since we've been together.
